strata recipe

Cheese Strata with Ham and Tomatoes

  • Cook Time:

    55 min
  • Level:

    Intermediate
  • Yield:

    6 to 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 12 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
  • Pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup diced baked ham
  • 1 cup Oven-Dried Tomatoes, chopped, recipe follows
  • 1 tablespoon minced flat-leaf parsley leaves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons thinly sliced fresh chives
  • 2 cups shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces)
  • 1 pound sourdough bread (boule preferred), crust removed and cut into 1-inch cubes

Directions

Grease a 3-quart gratin dish or casserole with 1 teaspoon of the butter.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, nutmeg, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Set aside. In a small bowl, toss together the ham, tomatoes, parsley, and chives.
To make the strata: Scatter a 1/2 cup of the cheese over the bottom of the buttered dish, cover with one-third of the bread, and then half of the tomato mixture. Repeat. Top with a final layer of bread and remaining cheese.
Pour the egg mixture over the strata and gently press it down with the back of a large spoon to make sure the top layer is moistened with the custard. Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and drizzle it over the strata. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the strata, uncovered, until golden brown and slightly puffed, about 45 to 55 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
Yield: 6 to 8 servings
  • Oven-Dried Tomatoes
  • 2 pounds ripe plum tomatoes, cored and cut in half lengthwise
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • Extra-virgin olive oil (optional)
  • Fresh herb sprigs, like thyme, rosemary, or sage (optional)
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Arrange the tomatoes cut side-up in a single layer on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with the salt. Dry in oven until slightly shriveled but still plump, about 5 to 6 hours.
If not using immediately, store the tomatoes in a sealed container in the refrigerator, for 3 to 4 days. Alternatively, layer them in a container with the herbs, cover with olive oil, and store, covered, in the refrigerator, for up to 2 weeks.
Yield: about 2 cups

New dress a day for only $1.00

I enjoyed looking at the site"New Dress a day". Thought you may like it too.

Every day for 365 days Marisa Lynch takes a frumpy dress that she only pays $1.00 for at a flea markets, vintage stores, garage  sales and thrift shops and turns it into something she would wear in public. She was inspired by the movie Julie Julia. She can only spend $1.00 a day.

Hi everyone! I wish I had more than one Susan Branch book to give away! But I don't...so the winner is........ KAREN @ Some Days Are Diamonds. Congratulations! I will be having another book give away next month (actually two books that I feel compliment each other).Thank you to everyone that entered! I'm slowly making my way to everyone that left a comment!

##############

You can grow a square pumpkin.

I feel that you can make pumpkins look however you want, whatever fits into your decor. Orange doesn't work for everyone! If your house is pastels you might want to just go with the white pumpkins. But you can also spray paint them any color you want. Pink, grey, purple, glitter them, rhinestone them - anything goes as far as I'm concerned! I painted a few red this year! Above are some things that I used to makeover some white pumpkins (some were orange originally and spray painted them white).

I made one polka dot pumpkin. It just makes me smile to look at it! I already had small colored dots leftover from when we had a garage sale and I just filled those in with a black sharpie. So very hi tech of me right!~smile. I also bought a package of Martha Stewart dots from Michaels and filled those in with a black sharpie too. You can cut circles out of black construction paper and glue them on a pumpkin if you don't have any of those sticky dots. All the photos will enlarge if you click on them.

This pumpkin topiary is made from one medium and one small pumpkin. The design on the front is from a rub on I found at Hobby Lobby. I made this one last year.

Aren't these cute! I love fleur's so when I found a little package of fleur stickers I knew I had to find a way to use them!

These two are my favorites! They're just stickers from the scrapbook aisle!

Go to the scrapbook section and have a look around. There are so many cute stickers you can use. There's no reason why you can't do a pumpkin with baseball stickers on it or a pink pumpkin with a ballerina on it. Use paint pens and do more than just draw a face - draw designs on it. Use your imagination and do what will work for your home!

You can paint real pumpkins but for the price of a real pumpkin I can get a faux one that will last forever. I bought two last year at the end of the season when they were very inexpensive. That's how I shop. This year for next year!

I hope I've given you some ideas! Have fun with your pumpkins! They're easy to work with (except when using a stencil-I find those hard to manipulate). Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great weekend!
 Thank you Manuela from
The Pleasure of homemaking

Beautiful Jackie's Prom

Washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen can be more fun with a Yellow Finch.

I like to have something pretty to look at when I wash the dishes or cleaning up the kitchen so I  planted Sunflowers right out my kitchen window.

Every morning these yellow Finches like to eat the Sunflower seeds.

There so pretty and sweet perching some times upside down on those sunflower heads singing pretty little songs.

I actually enjoy doing kitchen work more.
Hmm...I wonder if I could get a Sunflower to grow in my cluttered closet?

Bacon in a microwave video

I just made up some Roundy's  shoulder bacon. It is pretty good flavor , not to salty either and low in fat. What I liked about it was mostly meat instead of fat.

Spicing Up My Drab White Walls on a Budget!

Alright, so as most of you know, I live on a large military base in base housing. You are allowed to paint your home if you choose, however,  you do have to paint it back to the oh so drab starch white color when you move out. I personally decided not to paint. I didn’t want to waste money on paint and didn’t want to deal with the hassle of having to repaint when we move. …AND in the Military, you never really know when you’re going to have to move!
I despise white walls.
…So with that said, I have hung up lots of pictures to try to distract from those white walls. Well, last week I was browsing Amazon and came across these Tree Branches Peel and Stick Wall Decals. They were and still are priced at $18.13. They also have 5 star reviews. Anyway, I thought for $18 I’d go ahead and try them out. I was a little worried, though, they would arrive and not quite look like they do in the pictures. I’m not at all artistic either, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to stick them on the walls and actually make them look decent.
Well, take a look:
I was pretty impressed with myself! :D My Hubby was even proud and at first he actually thought I painted the tree! Little did he know it was just a bunch of stickers. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking to spice up drab walls!
I am in NO way affiliated with this company. I am just giving an honest opinion about a product I really like!
Thanks HIP2SAVE
